Paula in India

I'm on an assignment for my job to live in India. I tell my friends I'm "commuting" - 4 weeks in India, 2 weeks in the States to the office and to see my husband, another 4 weeks in India....and wanted to share what life is like in India. You'll also find additional blog entries along the left panel under Archives.

Chaturshringi Temple

On Sunday, Jyotiprasad (JP), his wife Vandana and son Aidtya took me to see some sights in Pune. We went to a Hindu temple called Chaturshringi. At the base of the temple stairs, there were shops where you could buy flowers or items to offer inside the temple. Vandana bought a string of flowers. There were several sets of stairs. We stopped at several different locations - on one of the levels, there was an area for the elephant god, Ganesh. Vandana explained that everyone stops at Ganesh first before they worship any other gods.

We went to the top of the stairs, paid someone to watch our shoes (you have to be barefoot to enter the main temple), and walked inside the temple. Men were on one side, women on another. There was a fancy decorated wall with silver and some statues where people would drop off their offering, and a priest would provide them with a blessing and with an item to take home with them that had been blessed. Vandana received half of a coconut with some puffed rice inside. I couldn't take pictures inside the temple, but did get a few of the grounds and the first stop at Ganesh.
